{"id":2620,"date":"2012-02-23T01:00:24","date_gmt":"2012-02-23T09:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.doorposts.com\/blog\/?p=2620"},"modified":"2015-03-25T12:17:12","modified_gmt":"2015-03-25T19:17:12","slug":"seven-things-that-god-hates-and-you-should-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.doorposts.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/23\/seven-things-that-god-hates-and-you-should-too\/","title":{"rendered":"Seven Things that God Hates, and We Should, Too"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>&#8220;<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2624\" title=\"7\" src=\"http:\/\/www.doorposts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"264\" \/>There are \u00a0six things that the Lord hates,\u00a0seven that are an abomination to him: h<\/em><em>aughty eyes, <\/em><em>a lying tongue, and \u00a0hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans,\u00a0feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who \u00a0breathes out lies, and one who \u00a0sows discord among brothers&#8221; <\/em>(Proverbs 6:16-19,\u00a0ESV).<\/p>\n<p>Verses 16-19 of Proverbs 6 list of some of the things that God hates. Discuss these verses with your children, and have them draw pictures to illustrate each of the sins listed.<\/p>\n<p>Below each sin are some examples of ways children (and adults) practice these sins. When discussing these, don&#8217;t miss the opportunity to <strong>make clear that God hates <em>all <\/em>sin<\/strong>. He hates it so much that we cannot have fellowship with Him apart from faith in His Son, who paid the penalty for our sin and clothes us with His righteousness. <strong>Through Him, we are given the grace to love and obey God. <\/strong>Through Him, and only Him, we are given the strength to do what is right, as described in the verses that are listed here with each sin.<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Haughty eyes<\/strong> (or a proud look)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rolling the eyes in response to something said to them,<\/li>\n<li>Looking down on someone younger, different, or less intelligent<\/li>\n<li>Setting themselves up as the judge of others<\/li>\n<li>Thinking they are wiser than their parents and other elders<\/li>\n<li>Criticizing parents and other authorities<\/li>\n<li>Arguing with parents<\/li>\n<li>Disobeying and openly rebelling against authorities<\/li>\n<li>Ingratitude<\/li>\n<li>Boasting about one&#8217;s accomplishments, status, or knowledge<\/li>\n<li>Disrespect<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>&#8220;For God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.\u00a0Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time&#8221;<\/em> (1 Peter 5:5-6).<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>A lying tongue<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not telling the truth about a wrongdoing<\/li>\n<li>Withholding information that others need to have<\/li>\n<li>Hypocritical words<\/li>\n<li>Flattering to gain something from someone<\/li>\n<li>Exaggerating the facts<\/li>\n<li>Implying that something is true, or purposely leading someone to an incorrect assumption<\/li>\n<li>Telling partial truths<\/li>\n<li>Not honoring parents&#8217; rules when they are absent<\/li>\n<li>Not offering evidence against a wrongdoer when necessary<\/li>\n<li>Committing to doing something with no real intention of following through<\/li>\n<li>Making excuses<\/li>\n<li>Blaming others for own sinful actions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>&#8220;Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight&#8221;<\/em> (Proverbs 12:22).<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Hands that shed innocent blood <\/strong>(Although children may not <em>murder<\/em> someone, they <em>will<\/em> exhibit anger, indifference, and other emotions that drive them to physically harm others.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bullying<\/li>\n<li>Hitting, biting, kicking, hurting others<\/li>\n<li>Striking parents<\/li>\n<li>Carelessly abusing or killing animals for amusement (such as shooting little birds with a BB gun)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>&#8220;He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour&#8221; <\/em>(Proverbs 21:21).<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>A heart that devises wicked plans<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plotting revenge<\/li>\n<li>Snubbing someone<\/li>\n<li>Conspiring to deceive or hurt someone<\/li>\n<li>Lying about a long series of actions in order to cover sin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>&#8220;Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good&#8221; <\/em>(Romans 12:21).<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>Feet that make haste to run to evil<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Joining with others to do wrong when the authority is not present<\/li>\n<li>Delighting in doing wrong<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>&#8220;Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it&#8221; <\/em>(Psalm 34:14).<\/p>\n<p><em><br \/>\n<\/em>6. <strong>A false witness who \u00a0breathes out lies<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Falsely accusing someone of misbehavior and sin<\/li>\n<li>Misrepresenting a disagreement between people<\/li>\n<li>Falsely describing the actions of another person in a way that implies his guilt<\/li>\n<li>Not offering evidence against someone when asked to give testimony<\/li>\n<li>Covering for someone who has committed a wrongdoing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>&#8220;Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: so shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man&#8221; <\/em>(Proverbs 3:3-5).<\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>One who \u00a0sows discord among brothers<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teasing<\/li>\n<li>Listening to gossip and repeating gossip<\/li>\n<li>Slandering, repeating truths that will harm another person&#8217;s reputation<\/li>\n<li>Leading others to imagine the worst about someone<\/li>\n<li>Stirring up disagreements and jealousies<\/li>\n<li>Arousing suspicions against someone<\/li>\n<li>Meddling in the disagreements of others<\/li>\n<li>Taking sides in disagreements<\/li>\n<li>Envying the success and blessing of others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>&#8220;Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle?
