My heart was much better prepared for worship. This Sunday is a real challenge! Besides being ready for church, we also are getting ready for our church\u2019s annual family camp. Sunday evening we head to the beach for a week of teaching, fellowship, and fun. I think this is our 23<sup>rd<\/sup> year doing this, except for the year Susannah was born a week before camp started. We only went for one day that year!<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in pursuing the topic of Sabbath rest further, here are some books to consider reading:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Making-Sunday-Special-Karen-Burton\/dp\/1562332538\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Making Sunday Special\" src=\"http:\/\/g-ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/G\/01\/ciu\/3c\/da\/ed19f0f9e7a0d840cd768110.L._AA300_.jpg\" alt=\"Making Sunday Special\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><strong><em>\u2022 \u00a0Making Sunday Special,<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>by Karen Burton Mains (Star Song Communications Group). This is the book, combined with our own dear pastor\u2019s teaching, that triggered the reformation of our day of rest many years ago. It looks at the Jewish traditions of anticipating, preparing for, and celebrating the Sabbath, and applies those principles to celebrating the Lord\u2019s Day. Mrs. Mains offers ideas for preparing the home and the <strong>heart<\/strong> for the Lord\u2019s Day. Chapters include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Making Sunday Special<\/li>\n<li>Jewish Sabbath Tradition<\/li>\n<li>Lord\u2019s Day Eve<\/li>\n<li>Lord\u2019s Day Preparations<\/li>\n<li>Getting Organized<\/li>\n<li>Getting Rid of Sunday Anxieties<\/li>\n<li>Getting Heart and Mind Ready<\/li>\n<li>Getting-Started Exercises<\/li>\n<li>The Sacred Rhythm of Work and Play<\/li>\n<li>Lord\u2019s Day Participation<\/li>\n<li>Making Time Holy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.exodusbooks.com\/details.aspx?id=2501\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-893\" title=\"lghidden-art-of-homemaking\" src=\"http:\/\/www.doorposts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/lghidden-art-of-homemaking.jpg\" alt=\"The Hidden Art of Homemaking\" width=\"191\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a>\u2022 \u00a0The Hidden Art of Homemaking,<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>by Edith Schaeffer (Tyndale House Publishers).\u00a0Here I am, mentioning <em>Hidden Art <\/em>again! Much of Mrs. Schaeffer\u2019s message can be applied to making the Lord\u2019s Day a more beautiful and restful day, but I list this book here because of the suggestions she includes in her chapter on \u201cPainting, Sketching, and Sculpturing.\u201d \u00a0She has a delightful account of illustrating and \u201ctranslating\u201d a sermon for children with quick drawings. With her own children and then her grandchildren, she would draw simple illustrations, and whisper brief explanations to help them understand the sermon that was being given. The book includes several examples of her drawings.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.exodusbooks.com\/details.aspx?id=8818\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-894\" title=\"parenting-in-the-pew-book-review\" src=\"http:\/\/www.doorposts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/parenting-in-the-pew-book-review.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"165\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a>\u2022 \u00a0Parenting in the Pew, <\/em><\/strong>by Robbie Castleman (IVP Books).\u00a0This book focuses on teaching our children to worship. It addresses the anticipation of and preparation for worship, teaching children to be quiet and attentive with their parents in the sanctuary, and involving them in the Scripture reading, music, prayer, preaching, and sacraments of worship.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.doorposts.com\/details.aspx?id=11\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"A Day of Delight\" src=\"http:\/\/www.doorposts.com\/images\/products\/DOD.jpg\" alt=\"A Day of Delight\" width=\"200\" height=\"247\" \/><\/a>\u2022 \u00a0A Day of Delight,<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>by Pam Forster (Doorposts Publishing).\u00a0This is our compilation of ideas for Sundays. We include suggestions for a Saturday dinner, meals for a day of rest, and ways to make the worship service more meaningful for the entire family. For the rest of the day, after worship, we outline ideas for a Sunday Box with Sunday-only toys, games, and books, and Sunday activities that revolve around Scripture, praise and worship, reflection and meditation, fellowship, remembering God\u2019s creation, performing acts of mercy, and exercising our God-given creativity.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.exodusbooks.com\/details.aspx?id=2150\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-895\" title=\"celebrating-the-sabbath\" src=\"http:\/\/www.doorposts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/celebrating-the-sabbath.jpg\" alt=\"Celebrating the Sabbath\" width=\"189\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a>\u2022 \u00a0Celebrating the Sabbath,<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>by Bruce Ray (P &amp; R Publishing). This book is subtitled \u201cFinding Rest in a Restless World.\u201d Building on the fourth commandment\u2019s claim of God\u2019s sovereignty over our time, our work, and our rest, the author states, <em>\u201cThe Sabbath calls me to recognize that the world doesn\u2019t depend on me. The planet is not going to fall apart if I don\u2019t go to the office, make some phone calls, or get this or that done today. Somehow God seems to keep the universe going without my help. We can pause from our labors and rest in his, realizing that in the end it is God who holds it all together, \u2018sustaining all things by his powerful word.\u2019\u201d <\/em>Controversies related to the Sabbath and Lord\u2019s Day are addressed, as well as the means for celebrating the Lord\u2019s Day in a happy and holy manner.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The following books are on my \u201cTo Read\u201d shelf<\/strong>, so I haven\u2019t read them all the way through, but have perused them. Some deal with the Sabbath, others with matters of the church. They all look good, and someday I\u2019ll make my way through them!
