Helping Our Children See God’s Love

“We love Him because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)

If we want our children to love God, one of the most important things we can do is to help them understand how much He loves them.

Try this little project to help you teach your children about God’s love:

Ask your children to point out every evidence of God’s love that they notice throughout the day. They may need a little help getting started, but then they should be seeing and commenting on things all day! The list really never ends!

The sun, their food, the family car, Daddy’s job or the way God and His people are taking care of you while Daddy’s unemployed, their sox, their toys, their parents, their church, the bird that sings in the tree out the window, their books, protection from an accident, an owie that’s healing, the stars, a letter in the mail — even a spanking — are just a few of the thousands of ways God shows us His love every single day.

If you want, take notes on all the ways they see God showing His love to them. Review the list at the dinner table, talking about how God shows us His love through all those things. Then finish out the day reading and discussing John 3:16. This verse tells us about the most important way God has shown His love to us.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.”
